Sea king

The Sea King has been developed and manufactured by Agusta-Westland in the United-Kingdom under license of Sikorsky. The sea king is a derived version version from the H-3 Sea King (the H-3 Sea king has been developed by the American company Sikorsky Aircraft). The sea king is in service with Belgium, the United-Kingdom and Australia.

Belgium
The Sea Kings in Belgium are used for rescue by accidents in the civil aviation of military aviation above Belgium and Luxembourg. Other missions are SAR, support by civil ships in emergency, search of missing people and surveillance of the Belgium coastline.

Australia
Since 1975 the Australian Navy has seven Westland Sea King Mk 50A helicopters which are stationed by the 817th squadron. The helicopters are used for:
- transport of persons and supply between ships ands from ships to land.
- SAR missions
- detect and reporting of enemy ships
- torpedo and depth environment supply
- transport of army during a movement of land forces from sea to land

 

United-Kingdom
The British Navy has Sea King Airborne Surveillance and Area Control (ASaC) helicopters and Sea King Mk4 helicopters. The British Air Force has Sea King heli's for SAR missions.
The Sea King Mk4 is the command version and is used for direct supply of the Royal Marines. It can transport 27 troops over a distance of approximately 400 mile. It can also transport land rovers, 105mm artillery and air-defence missile systems. The Mk4 has suitable defence equipment to detect enemy anti-aircraft radar, missiles and anti-aircraft systems.


The first Sea King helicopters from the Royal Air Force came in service in september 1977. They have been developed by Westland as a European version from the origin American Sikorsky H-3. The RAF has 15 Sea king helicopters where of 6 have been updated to Sea King Mark 3A in 1992. They toke over the roles of the old Wessexes helicopters.
The Sea King helicopters from the British Navy will be updated by Agusta-Westland, BAE Systems and Thales UK. With this update the Sea Kings will get more opportunities for support missions.
