The F101 turbofan engine with afterburner and variable geometric nozzle has been specially developed for the B-1 Lancer (USAF supersonic bomber).
the F101 motor was developed for a project under the name Advanced Manned
Strategic Aircraft program. Specially intended to deliver an engine
for the new US Strategic bomber. The F101-GE-101 was
introduced by General Electric from 1970. After testflights with 4 B-1B's,
the USAF have GE the task to develop a improved version which became designated
as the F101-GE-102.
469 of this type of engine has been manufactured to fit on the B-1B Lancer between 1983 and 1986.
The engines are mounted beneath the suspension of the wings. There are 2 separate air inlets on both sides.
