The F-35 Lightning II is a single-engine 5th-generation stealth air-to-ground
fighter with advanced sensors, avionics, aerodynamics and a state-of-the-art
AESA radar. The primary missions are air-to-ground with
secondary missions for air-to-air combat. The prime contractor is Lockheed-Martin
with Boeing as a the main subcontractor.
There are 3 versions; the F-35A (1),
F-35B (2) and the F-35C (3).
The F-35A is the conventional version which needs a conventional runway
for takeoff and landing. The F-35A will be the most produced version,
mainly for the US Air Force.

The F-35B is a Short takeoff and Landing version, capable of vertical
take-off and landing. Main user is the US Marine Corps.

Marine Corps F-35B (MCAS Miramar
The F-35C is the carrier version, capable of takeoff and landing from
current and future aircraft carriers. The F-35C will be delivered to
the US Navy.

Some countries which are working with the United States are: the United-Kingdom,
Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia and Norway.
The F-35 is planned to be purchased by:
1. United States
Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) ordered 46 F-35A's. The first
8 F-35's (initialy on Eglin AFB, Florida but since 2014 on Edwards AFB
in California) were produced by Lockheed
Martin in the Fort Worth, Texas plant. The remaining 36 F-35's are being
assembled by the Alenia
Aermacchi plant in Cameri (Italy).
On October 21, 2019 the first operational F-35A was delivered to Leeuwarden
AFB (Netherlands). A second F-35A was delivered a few weeks later to
Leeuwarden. The F-35's will be stationed on Leeuwarden and Volkel AFB
to replace the F-16AM's.
In Juli 2013, the first F-35 was delivered to the Dutch Ministry of
Defene. The aircraft was operated from Eglin AFB, Florida, untill the
Dutch but was later moved to Edwards AFB in California.
In January 2020 the US approved a sale of 12 F-35B's (incl. 13 F135
engines) for Singapore, with an option of 8 more aircraft.
